The herd manager

Our herd managers play a crucial role at our organization. They conduct weekly checks on the animals, the terrain, and the fences. They also act as hosts in the area, responsible not only for the herds but also serving as a resource for the public. Our managers possess extensive knowledge of the natural behaviour of our large grazers.

The behaviour of the animals serves as the primary indicator of their well-being. Through regular herd checks, our managers closely monitor this knowledge. They also ensure a careful composition of the herds, taking into account genetic variation and family bonds within the group. Our animals undergo regular physical checks. While we work with self-sufficient breeds, there may be occasions where a particular animal requires medical assistance. In such cases, our managers consult with veterinarians.

Visitors suspecting that an animal needs assistance can contact our herd managers any time. In emergencies, they are available 24/7 via our emergency number, +31 ()6 29015731, and for general inquiries during office hours. On our website, you can select the relevant area to find contact details for the managers or learn more about the people behind FREE Nature.

Annually, our herds are gathered to tag and/or chip newborn foals and calves. This is also the time when some animals are taken out of the project to prevent overgrazing. In accord with the client, the herd manager determines the suitable number of animals for an area, always striving for an optimal balance to prevent overgrazing without the need for supplementary feeding. If insufficient food is available in the area, supplemental feeding may be necessary.

In addition to these responsibilities, organizing excursions is also part of the manager's duties. If you wish to learn more about the area, the animals, or would like to participate in an excursion, feel free to contact our herd managers.
