Grazing management
FREE Nature manages grazing in over 30 different natural areas across the Netherlands, providing comprehensive support to clients. Our services include herd deployment, fence maintenance, as well as conducting field lessons and excursions.
Our herds at FREE Nature are social groups comprised of both young and old animals, and maintaining a balance of male and female individuals. The grazers live under natural conditions, with herd sizes adjusted based on local environmental conditions. The animals are selected for their self-sufficiency, and reproduce independently. Bull fights contribute to the creation of bull pits, fostering local species variation and biodiversity. Importantly, FREE Nature herds are not preemptively dewormed. (Medical) interventions only occur when immediate care for an animal is necessary, guided by a local veterinarian and our internally developed ethical guidelines.
FREE Nature's managers act as hosts over these natural areas, welcoming visitors and providing explanations about the large grazers and the flora and fauna. They are supported by local volunteers recruited and trained by FREE Nature, ensuring that the story of FREE Nature and the management practices are communicated within the (local) community. This approach fosters community support and ensures sustainable management practices.
